Wednesday night throws forth a huge game in the Premier League and the fixture was made a little more interesting because of Chelsea slipping to a shock defeat on the weekend. Chelsea, who are still the Champions-elect in the English top flight, threw everything including the kitchen sink at Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on the weekend but slipped to a 2-1 defeat. That was a blow for them and it allowed Spurs, who won at Burnley, to close the gap to seven points.
That’s still a hefty cushion for Chelsea to defend, but if they lose this one at the Bridge against City in midweek, their grip on the title would slip just a little bit more. So the pressure is on the Blues to find some kind of response here. They did go and land a convincing 3-1 win at the Etihad earlier this season and overall they have put up a tremendous W12 L2 record in their fourteen league home games this season. This will be time for them to prove just what Champions are made of.
As for Manchester City, they will be happy enough in securing a top four place this season as the title looks beyond them, even if they were to win this fixture. The Citizens have only managed to draw their last three league games now, so their winning touch has deserted them. In last season’s trip to Stamford Bridge, though, the Citizens produced a fantastic 3-0 win thanks to Sergio Aguero’s hat trick. Can they produce the goods down in London again?
The Citizens have only lost one of their last six trips down to Capital in the Premier League and they are currently on a good run of unbeaten form in the top flight. So there is an air of resiliency about them, but the defensive mistakes in their 2-2 draw with Arsenal on the weekend, along with injuries to their back line, means that they could be vulnerable. The Citizens hold a W7 D3 L5 record in the last fifteen games against Chelsea now, but will they be able to put the win on the board?
